If any of you live in a tri-level like me you know there is an awkward space in the lower level family room. See it down there, behind the dining area and by the sliding glass doors. I tried a lot of different things here and everything looked pretty bad. Not only did it look bad but it wasn’t very useful. I decided to give building some built-in bookshelves a try.
I think they turned out pretty well. As with any project, it isn’t perfect, but getting better every time.
To get started I went to Ana White’s Website and got some plans for a bookshelf. I adjusted the measurements to fit my needs and headed out to Home Depot. I have to give a huge thank you to Russ from HD he cut all of my lumber free of charge with a smile on his face! I even filled out the survey so maybe he could get some props. This is only a portion of the lumber—there was A LOT!!!
With some wood glue and my trusty nail gun I got them together pretty easy.
I added a back, removed the railing and installed them.
To make the shelves look a little more substantial and more finished I added 1 x 2 trim EVERYWHERE
Time to sand, caulk, paint, and stuff them full.
They are definitely not decorative built-ins, but I couldn’t be happier with the organization and space they have given us.

This is so awesome! I'm actually looking for desk space ideas, I started a little Etsy shop and wanted to get all my things organized. Thanks for the great idea!
ReplyDeleteYou did an AH-MAZING job! I used to have one of those houses with the awkward spaces! I love it.
ReplyDeleteI love it! Functional and I think it turned out kinda pretty myself! : )
ReplyDeleteThat's great1 Almost like you have a separate room.
ReplyDeleteFantastic work. I love Ann White's plans. I made an entertainment center and bookcase so far. This weekend I want to try a head board. I can't wait!
ReplyDeleteLove this! I am working on a space and trying to decide what to do with it. May have to consider making what I want!
ReplyDeleteWe lived in a tri-level before we bought our current house. We used that area between the family room and stairs, as a desk area too. It's the perfect spot! I'm amazed at your lumber skills! Awesome unit! Love all that shelving for organization. You did a great job!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the link! I really appreciate it! I need a lot of help :) Michelle
Great job! I hope it helps bring order to your computer area. It is a difficult place in most homes.

Describes my life to a T.
Thanks.
Awesome!
ReplyDeleteGreat looking desk and shelves. What does it look like from the other side with the railing? All in all looks wonderful. My wife and I need to create some more shelving in our house. We bought a fixer uper a year ago and have been working on it ever since. If we ever do built in shelving I now have a reference point to start.

Love it! So impressed at how well it fits into that area. Curious how it looks on the other side (from the second level). What did you put on the back or is it painted too?
