Ceiling Medallion Bed Canopy-Project Fail

This is one of the projects that took my mojo last week. I would consider it an almost fail, but I thought I would post it anyway. Maybe someone can get inspired and turn it into a spectacular project.

I saw this BHG Inspiration on Centsational Girl. I thought it was lovely.

I went to check out ceiling medallions and they were more than I wanted to pay. I started thinking if I just had a big plastic round thing, then I remembered I did. I bought a couple last year at the Goodwill for 50 cents. It looked like a tray a caterer would use.

Perfect, or so I thought.

I added some textured scrapbook paper.

Then I primed and painted the whole thing pink. After I was done I thought, why not add some crystals to the middle to make it a little more fancy. I had all crystals and beads from my Mom, may as well put them to use. That black thing you see is one of the screws I used to put it up. I was going to paint them pink, but after I got it up and didn't like it I didn't bother. I am going to take it down.

I used my glue gun to attach the tulle to my "medallion". I burnt the crap out of my fingers!

And for the grand finale.....

Not great, right.

Let me tell you where I went wrong. My "medallion" doesn't lay flat against the ceiling which is something I didn't notice until I had it all the way up. The texture on the scrapbook paper isn't noticeable, and my tulle placement was off. Also I kind of forgot the whole, this is going in a 2 year old's room having it spread out and pretty isn't going to work.

I am going to have to take it down and rework it, or scrap the whole idea. I haven't decided what my plan is yet.

Well hopefully this project fail will be an inspiration to someone and they can take the idea and run with it.

On another note, there is still time to join the My Favorite DIY party, and I will be out of town this weekend so I will be returning emails, etc. on Monday.

Have a wonderful weekend.

  2. They say you learn more from "failure" than success. Trust me when I say, I can vouch for that! I for one don't think this project is a failure. Honestly, I thought your idea of using a platter and textured scrapbook paper was fantastic! I love that you painted it all pink. The tulle is so feminine and cute. There's a lot to love about this project! I also LOVE the Grace "headboard." So cute!

  3. I hate when things don't work out like you think they should. I have thrown away so many projects, luckily most came from the good will or the dollar store!

  4. I think you just need more of everything. Tons more fabric on the draping-maybe you can find something of a teeny bit heavier weight to add. And maybe one or two more pillows-big ones.
    It's coming along!

  6. Oh you poor thing burning your fingers like that and then you don't like it! I think it looks pretty good. I am not a fan of the sign though, it looks out of scale to the light you have above it. It is a beautiful sign but I don't know if that is the spot for it. Maybe the picture doesn't show how bad the canopy looks, but I like it! I think you did a wonderful job with your creation!

  7. your version is wonderful though.... really. you should give yourself more credit.

I know what you feel like when a project you work on doesn't come out right though. I've just done one of those.... my daughters dress up dress. That post is going up tomorrow. lol we must have came from the same mojo when we created our "experiments"

  8. I think you did a great job! I wanted to try this with my line of ceiling medallions for children's rooms. I'm going to attach the fabric with velcro on the sides, so it doesn't create a space when I attach it to the ceiling. I also noticed that your ceiling has a popcorn finish, I think that is the main problem. Other than that, I think it looks great!!
