I am sure many of you have an area where you keep coloring stuff for your kids--here is mine
What a NIGHTMARE--something has to be done! What is it THEY say--you can't expect everything to be in its place if everything doesn't have a place.
That is when I walked into the garage and inspiration struck. I saw three pails that I used last Spring for flowers and a leftover piece of MDF--art supply shelf came to me, and even better it would be free because I already had everything I needed.
Here is how I did it:
Cut MDF to length, mine were 24". I used a 1x6 for the shelf and a 1x2 for the ledger.
Install ledger making sure it is level. Make sure you screw into studs or use drywall anchors.
Now it is time to cut holes in the shelf for the pails to sit in. Decide how big you want your circle, drill a whole for the jigsaw to fit through then cut. It was at this point I realized I still need a little work with the jigsaw. My first circle was a little rough, but they got better.
Clamp it to the workbench to hold it still for drilling and cutting.
Now it is time to install the shelf to the ledger. I just pre-drilled holes and then screwed it in. I found it a little difficult to get close to the wall to get the screws tight enough so I broke out the socket wrench-it worked like a charm.
Paint, and you are ready to organize.
I added a magazine holder to the wall to hold coloring books and paper. So far so good--now everything has a place now lets see if stuff makes it back in, and don't worry, I put outlet covers in the outlet after I was done using them.
Here are a couple of pictures of their little coloring nook.
The pails came from the Target dollar spot last year. Now I might have to spruce them like The Loyd Collection did to hers. They are super cute. If you don't have a magazine holder laying around check out Generally Creative she has a great post on a DIY option.

Just Another Hang Up
This is a wonderful idea. At our house, the craft supplies are in different tins, but everytime the tins are opened, the crayons/ pencils etc go flying everywhere... tins are just too difficult for little hands to manage!
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog too!

That is such a cool idea! We could use a space like that in our home. Thanks for following. :)
ReplyDeletegreat idea for your little ones! I'm all for offering creative outlets for kids. We always had an easel set up in he kitchen so they could be in there with me while I was cooking.
ReplyDeleteHey! Thanks for visiting! I used two different greens. The one in the kitchen was Lincolnshire Olive by Ralph Lauren and the color in the basement is Asparagus by Baer (Home Depot). Hope that helps.

ReplyDeleteThe idea of creating a functional art supply shelf is wise enough for kids to help make the home neat and clean. For DIY houses to be functional, all things found at home must be in their proper places. Indeed, Frugal Home Designs provided us a useful tip in order to place art supply in the right place.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, most diy houses looked good and the designs are mostly elegant.
ReplyDeleteI love how awesome it looks - I love the buckets and the functionality of this all. Way to go!
ReplyDeleteVery FuN...and loVe how the kiddos have their own little space!! I featured this here:

Thanks so much for sharing! :)
I just saw these little buckets at the Target $1 section yesterday (6-16) they were red or white or blue or some had flower designs on them. I looked at them but didn't have a use for them- yet. Thanks for enabling my Target shopping!!
ReplyDeleteGreat project! Fast easy and so functional for kids of any age. Yeah, I think I need one for the area behind my computer monitor!
So, did you just trace the tops of the buckets onto the board to get your hole circumference?
ReplyDeleteThat is so cute! I really like all the DIY home improvement ideas I'm seeing for kids. I'll have to keep this page bookmarked until they're old enough to color!
